MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a sulfur-containing compound naturally found in many plants. It provides a concentrated source of organic sulfur, an essential element for the proper functioning of the horse's body.
Sulfur plays a role in the structure of various tissues, including cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, skin, mane, tail and hooves. It is involved in the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids and structural proteins such as collagen and keratin.
Thanks to its properties being studied in relation to joint comfort, inflammation and oxidative stress, MSM is particularly interesting for supporting sport horses, older horses and horses experiencing joint or muscular sensitivity.
Joint support: contributes to maintaining joint flexibility, mobility and comfort.
Muscle comfort: supports recovery after exercise and may help limit exercise-related inflammatory responses.
Connective tissue support: provides organic sulfur, an important element for joint structures, tendons and ligaments.
Antioxidant action: MSM is being studied for its role in protecting against oxidative stress, particularly during intense physical exercise.
Skin, mane, tail and hooves: contributes to the nutritional supply of sulfur, an element found in keratin.
Respiratory comfort: its anti-inflammatory properties are also of interest in supporting horses with respiratory sensitivities, although scientific evidence in horses remains limited.
MSM may be particularly beneficial when a horse shows:
Joint stiffness, especially after a period of rest.
Difficulty warming up and regaining flexibility.
Shortened strides or changes in movement.
Joint sensitivity, particularly in the hocks.
Swollen or unusually warm joints.
Difficulty recovering muscularly after training or competition.
Respiratory allergies accompanied by coughing or laboured breathing.
Chronic respiratory conditions, such as heaves (equine asthma, formerly known as COPD).
Periods of increased physical demands: intensive training, transport, competition or physical stress.
MSM is also being studied for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may be of interest in supporting respiratory health.
Some sources mention its use in horses suffering from respiratory allergies, coughing or chronic respiratory conditions, particularly heaves.
Daily amounts of 20 g of MSM are sometimes mentioned for these horses. However, the benefits and specific dosage for this application have not yet been sufficiently established through clinical studies in horses. MSM does not replace veterinary treatment for equine asthma.
MSM can be used alone or combined with glucosamine and chondroitin as part of nutritional supplementation aimed at maintaining joint comfort.
100% methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). Free from additives, preservatives and anti-caking agents.
Recommended dosage: 2 g of MSM per 100 kg of body weight per day, to be mixed into the daily feed.
Horse weighing 600 kg: 12 g per day.
Horse weighing 500 kg: 10 g per day.
Pony weighing 300 kg: 6 g per day.
Shetland pony weighing 150 kg: 3 g per day.
One 15 ml measuring scoop corresponds to 10 g of MSM.
Use for a renewable 1-month course or as a prolonged daily maintenance supplement, depending on individual needs.
1 kg = 100 days of use for a 500 kg horse, at a daily dose of 10 g.
Do not give to pregnant mares.
Intended exclusively for equines. Close the packaging tightly after each use. Store in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
